Over the last couple of months Gmail has been making a lot of changes to it’s appearance. But recently they have come out with an update that is very important for those who use email marketing. [newsletter]
Gmail has started working with tabs and installed them for every user. Only those who have Gmail directed to an offline program like Outlook won’t be affected. Everyone who replies to email online will now see 3 to 5 tabs at the top of their list of emails.
The last 2 may not be activated for everyone but the first 3 are.
This means that your newsletter will now arrive in the promotions tab and not in the primary tab. This can be bad news. People may ignore this tab altogether and just empty it once in a while. Most trash emails that get past the trash filters will end up on this tab as well and that is not where you want your newsletter to end up.
[themecolor]What can we do about it?[/themecolor]
To be honest not too much. Gmail is not going to change this back. The only thing we can do is educate people about what is happening. Because thankfully there is a way to get rid of the tabs.
Tell people what to do if they want their old settings back. Have them go to settings. The little wheel at the right of your window. Click on it and select “configure inboxâ€
They will see the following window where they can unselect all tabs but primary. If they do this you basically have your old situation back and all email will come into primary.
I don’t dislike the idea of tabs, in fact I think it is a good idea. I do dislike the fact that Gmail installed them automatically and also that they are not giving us the opportunity of making our own tabs. But who know what the future has in stall for us.
